Chapter Thirteen

I couldn’t wait to crawl into bed when I got home. I was starving, but too tired to eat. I didn’t even wash my face. There’s nothing like working twelve hours for free and kissing someone else’s boyfriend and then entering a scene without hair to wear a person out.

I was asleep when the phone rang. I listened to the machine recording Jimmy’s invitation to meet everyone for drinks. He sounded buoyant, as he should be.

He’d accomplished the impossible. Written, produced, and starred in a sitcom. At least the pilot of a sitcom. If this got picked up—and that was a big if—he could find his way to huge success. Even if it didn’t get picked up, he’d made some seriously important connections and elevated his status from an unknown standup comedian to a real Hollywood player. He was on his way. So was Randy. I rolled over and went back to sleep.

By Christmas morning—three days later—I’d recovered physically from my job as a waitress extra but was still licking my wounds as the woman on the set who didn’t want to get any laughs but had possibly outdone the comedic actors in that regard. And the warm-up comedian.

I called my parents to wish them a Merry Christmas and talked to my brothers as well, who were there opening presents and getting ready for their big holiday meal. We’d promised not to send presents, so I had nothing to open. It was my idea. I couldn’t afford the postage, much less the gifts. I was also careful not to talk too long, knowing this would make my phone bill higher. I was tired of worrying about money and hoped things would pick up in January now that I had a decent agent.

I put on my red cardigan and a little enamel Christmas tree pin I’d had since childhood and sat down with my Thomas Guide to figure out how to get to Lafayette Square where Mrs. Hanover lived. I’d never been to that part of L.A., halfway between West Hollywood—where I lived—and downtown.

As I pulled into the neighborhood, my mouth fell open. It was only a few blocks wide as well as long, divided by a grassy median full of tall palm trees, but this community was nothing but gorgeous mansions, one after the other. It was like a mini residential Beverly Hills plopped down into the middle of a much grungier part of Los Angeles. I had assumed Mrs. Hanover had money—who else would have the leisure time to lunch out and buy designer clothes every week—but I really hadn’t expected to find her living in this neighborhood. I hadn’t expected to find this neighborhood at all, actually. Every lawn was perfectly manicured and decked out in Christmas decorations. The houses were different styles—hers was a Craftsman positioned between a Tudor and a Colonial—but they were all huge and looked historic. This place was old money.

I parked on the street a few houses down and walked up the sidewalk.
